AVex DVD to Zune Converter Tutorial

Part 1: Setting up Profiles

The first thing we are going to do is make our future life simpler by setting up a conversion profile. We do this by changing the values in the DVD conversion settings and then saving them in a profile.
  1. 1. Run AVex DVD to Zune Convert
    This is what you should see

  2. The optimum Video “Bitrate” to balance quality and battery life is 500 kbps, the closest we can set the Bitrate is 512 kbps
    1. Click on the bitrate value (400 kbps)
    2. Click on the drop-down menu button that appears on the right
    3. Click on 512

  3. Set the Frames per second (FPS)
    1. Click on the FPS value (24)
    2. Click on the drop-down menu button that appears on the right
    3. Click on 30

    Leave the Video codec as “Windows Media Video V8” and the size value as “320x240”


    Audio Settings
    Leave the audio codec as Windows Media Audio 9

  4. Click on the audio format value and select “128 kbps, 44kHz, stereo CBR” from the drop-down menu
  5. Time to save the settings in a profile
    1. Click on the “Save as…” button
      You should see this

    2. Enter a name for your profile
    3. Click “OK”

    Use this profile when you convert DVDs to watch on your Zune,br> If you are going to connect your Zune to a Television, you should create another profile with the video size as 640x480 and increase the video bitrate.

Part 2: Converting DVD’s

  1. Make sure your new Profile from Part 1 is listed beside “Use Profile”
    If it's not; use the drop-down menu to select it
  2. Setup your output folder in the field next to “Output Folder” You can do this by either
    1. Typing in the full path to the folder
    2. Click the “Browse”, explore, select a folder, and click “OK”
    3. Put your DVD into the DVD drive

  3. Open the DVD in AVex by either
    1. Clicking on the “Choose DVD” button and then selecting “Open DVD”

    2. Using the Menu options: File --> Open DVD

  4. Select your DVD drive in the pop-up browser window and click “OK”
    Your DVD should start playing, initially you should see a yellow bar above the preview screen like this

    Wait until the program has skipped over the introduction and menu and you see a green bar like this


  5. If the program doesn’t fast forward to the main feature, Go into the “Options” menu and select “Fast forward to DVD main movie when first play”, then go back to step 4.


  6. Click the “More Options” button to check/change settings for this conversion. You should see this


  7. If you know this DVD has low volume or a dark picture, you can adjust the slide controls to increase these.
    Usually leave these at
    1. Audio Volume at 5 i.e. slider in the center
    2. Video Brightness at original i.e. slider to the left

  8. The default output file name is the volume label name taken from the DVD. You can change this by editing the name in the “Output file name:” field
  9. Click “OK” to close the Output Settings
  10. If you want to change the audio language or you want sub-titles, use the “Options” menu and select “Audio” or “Subpicture”
  11. If you want to trim time off the beginning or end of the main feature, enter times for the conversion “Duration” and conversion “Start” in the conversion settings. Note: the duration is the running time from the start time.
  12. Click the “Convert” button to start the conversion You should see conversion progress information along the bottom of the window, like this


  13. If you don’t want to watch the conversion, minimize the window!


Part 3: The DVD Menu


This is the menu system on the DVD, the one you see on the television when you run the DVD in a DVD player. You can use the DVD menu to change the audio language, select sub-titles, and access any special features on the DVD so you can convert them, and to play the main feature.
Some of the time the DVD menu responds to the mouse other times you will have to use the keyboard.

To access the DVD Menu, click on the “Jump to DVD Menu” button

Try using the shortcuts below:
Press "1", "2", "3", "4" to select the DVD menu buttons, such as "Play", "Features", etc;
Press "i", "k", "j", "l" to move the cursor up, down, left and right
Press SPACE key in your keyboard to select.
