ImTOO DVD to Zune Converter Tutorial

  1. Open ImTOO DVD to Zune Converter
  2. Put your DVD in your DVD drive
  3. Open the DVD in ImTOO by either
    1. clicking the DVD button

    2. or by using the menu: Files --> Add DVD Folder…

  4. Select your DVD drive in the pop-up browser window and click “OK”
After the DVD file have been loaded, you should see something like this

  5. Click the “Check and Uncheck all” button
  6. In the ImTOO information panel there may be a number of entries starting with “Title_”. Find the one with a duration that matches the Run Time of your feature, or look for the longest duration.
    Check the box beside it.
  7. You can use the Preview Area to make sure that you have selected the main feature
  8. Make sure the “Profile” is “Zune WMV – Windows Media Video (*.wmv)
  9. In the Convert Output Settings Area; Slide the slide bar down until the Video and Audio settings are visible
  10. The optimum Video “Bitrate” to balance quality and battery life is 500, so for your first conversion, set the Bitrate to 512
    1. In the Video settings, click on the square with “Bit Rate”
    2. Click the drop down menu button in the square to the right and select “512”

If you decide you want better quality output on your Zune or you are going to connect to a TV, then set this higher – perhaps 768 or 1200. It’s trial and error until you find a value you are personally happy with. Higher Bitrates = larger files.
  11. Set the Audio “Sample Rate” to 44100Hz
  12. Set the Audio “Bitrate” to 128kbps.
If you are going to play the soundtrack through a Hi-Fi system, then set this higher
  13. Setup your output folder in the “Destination” field.
Use one of the three ways to do this

    1. You can type in the path to the folder
    2. Click the “Browse”
    3. Click the “Open” button

  14. To change the name of your output file
    1. Click on the “Title_ …” of your main feature from step 6.
    2. Press F2 or click in the “Title:” field
    3. Type in your output filename

  15. Select “None” from the Subtitle options
  16. Select the soundtrack language in the “Audio” options.
(Not all DVDs will have different soundtrack languages)
  17. This is the step where you decide whether or not you want to trim time off the beginning and/or end of the feature. This can reduce the size of the output file so that more movies will fit on your Zune.
If you just want to convert the whole feature, without trimming; set the “Split” to “Infinite”.

If you want to trim time off the beginning and/or end; go through these steps

    1. If you are going to trim the feature end time, do it before trimming the beginning
      • In the Preview area move the Play time slider across to just before where you want to trim off (trial and error)
      • Click play
      • When you reach the point you want to trim off, click the “Jump” button and make a note of the time shown

      • Click “OK” to close the Jump window
      • Set the “Split” to “Custom time”
      • Click “Configure…” beside the Split area
      • Enter the time you noted in the previous step
      • Click “OK” to close the Custom Time window
Your Custom end time should show like this

    2. To Trim time off the beginning of the feature
      • In the Preview area move the Play time slider across to the left
      • Click play
      • When you reach the point you want to trim off, click the “Jump” button
      • Click “OK” to close the Jump window

  18. Click the red Start Conversion button.
As the conversion progresses you should see a progress bar beside your feature. Like this:

You should also see conversion progress information along the bottom of the ImTOO window. Like this

Advanced Settings

There are more settings available in this program; they are accessed from the menu as: Settings --> Preferences…

The preferences will open in a window with two tabs (“General” and “DVD (Global)” see below) but you’ll probably want to leave the settings at the default values.
