Part 1: The hardware
The Zune Car Pack comprises two components
- A Zune car charger (can be used separately as such)
- The Zune FM Transmitter
Looking at the FM transmitter you see
- A display area
- Two buttons, one either side of the display
- A Zune connector on the top
- A Zune port on the base
The display will tell you the frequency (or station) the FM transmitter is broadcasting on.
The Left button is the “down” and the Right is “up”.
Each buttons has two functions
- Autoseek: If you press and hold a button the transmitter will auto seek for an available station to broadcast on
- Tune frequency: If you press and release a button, the frequency will change by 0.1Mhz
Connecting the hardware
- Attach the FM transmitter connector to the Zune port on the base of the Zune
- Plug one end of the charger in a car power outlet and the other end in the Zune port on the base of the FM transmitter
Part 2: Tuning
Method A) Tuning the FM Transmitter first using the Autoseek function:- Press and Hold either of the buttons until “AUTO SEEK” shows in the transmitter display
- When Autoseek stops searching a frequency will be displayed, tune your car radio to that frequency
- If the transmission is not clear, repeat a) and b) until you get clear sound or you cycle back through the same frequencies
Method B) Tuning your car radio first
- Manually adjust your car radio until you find a quiet frequency where no one else is broadcasting. You may want to store this frequency to a preset
- Adjust the Zune FM Transmitter until the frequency in the display matches your car radio
Having set the Zune Transmitter and the Car radio to the same frequency using either Method A) or Method B), you may improve reception by adjusting your car radio so it’s just a little off the Zune transmitter frequency.
Here’s how
- Make sure the Zune Transmitter and the Car Radio are set to the same frequency
- Adjust your Car radio frequency down in small steps until the sound quality is bad. Take a note of this frequency
- Adjust your Car radio frequency back up in small steps until the sound quality goes through good and becomes bad again. Take a note of this frequency
- Set your car radio in the middle between the frequencies from steps 2. and 3.
For example: With the Zune transmitter set at 87.7, I got the best sound by adjusting the car radio to 87.72
Part 3: FM Transmitter placement
If your sound quality is not very good, it could be the placement of the FM Transmitter. You will get better reception if the FM Transmitter is in direct line of sight with the antenna. The metal sides of the vehicle will act as a shield between the transmitter and the antenna.
Part 4: Adjustments on the Zune Device
- The equaliser setting on the Zune does adjust the music before its passed to the FM Transmitter for broadcast
Other notes:
- The headphone jack remains active while using the FM Transmitter. The Zune volume does not affect the signal strength from the FM Transmitter.
- The FM Transmitter turns On/Off with the Zune device.
- The FM Transmitter draws power from the Zune battery
We hope that following this Zunes.com guide will allow you to get the best out of the Zune Car Pack.
