Before you start the standard Zune
install
You will need: Your Zune, Zune sync cable, Zune software CD (if you have one), Internet access
- Optional: run a registry cleaning program. I use Max Secure Registry Cleaner but there are other programs
- Backup your registry

- Start
- Run…
- "regedit"
- Export
- choose a folder and file name
Like Dyyyymmdd_hhmm_ Pre_win_updt or whatever name you choose
e.g. D20061201_1000_Pre_win_updt - Exit regedit
- Install all the Windows Critical updates
Either:- do this: Start, All Programs, Windows Update
- or go here: http://update.microsoft.com/windowsupdate/v6/default.aspx?ln=en-us
- After Windows updates, backup your registry again to another file;
Like Dyyyymmdd_hhmm_ Pre_zune_install or whatever name you choose
Start using your Zune
- If you have a CD with the the Zune Software CD; insert into your CD or DVD drive and start the standard install
- If you don’t have a CD or you just make sure you start out with the latest version of the Zune software; download the Zune software from www.zune.net/setup
More getting started info at http://www.zune.net/en-us/support/howto/start/gettingready.htm - When prompted; connect your Zune to your computer. You can connect it using the sync cable supplied with your Zune or the Zune dock (sold separately)
- If your battery is very low you might need to wait a few minutes after plugging in your Zune while the battery charges enough to start
- When your Zune turns on, the Zune software will take you through the setup process.
You'll be prompted for an update to guarantee that your Zune gets all the latest features. When the update is complete, your Zune will restart by itself - Accept the update.
- Name your Zune
When you have wireless on, you'll be "visible" to other Zune owners nearby, and the name you give your Zune is the name they'll see
- Link your Zune to your Zune Tag
A Zune Tag is a name that represents you in the Zune Social. On the naming screen, you have the option to link your Zune to a Zune Tag. If you created a Zune account at any point before or during installation, you'll already have a Zune Tag. If you don't have one, you'll have a chance to create one if you want.
- You may have to restart Windows when prompted during the install, after Windows restart
- Decide what gets added to your Zune and what gets skipped every time you connect to your computer. You have two options for each type of media (music, videos, pictures, and podcasts) - sync everything or sync only the individual items you select
Changing sync settings- In the Zune software, click Settings, Device, Sync Options
- Sync all media types or only the types you choose
- The first time you charge your Zune - let the Zune battery charge fully, overnight is good
- To find out how to load your Zune with music, videos, pictures, and podcasts read our tutorial
